Poetry and Art
BC Grade 9 English Language Arts IRPs: Goes across a multiple of language areas including reading age appropriate fiction, reading poetry, and communicating ideas with fellow students and teachers.
Reflection: When students hear that our next unit is poetry, there is inevitably a contentious groan. I can understand their frustration. The poetry that I learned in school and the one that they have experienced inevitably looks at form (haiku, iambic pentameter) and the writings of long ago poets that lack the relevancy in today's world.
Unfortunately, many students don't connect that poetry exists all around them. At it's essence, poetry is matching beauty to words. It's an expression of ideas first formed by the mind eye and given form on paper. There is a natural match between poetry and art that can be expressed in various mediums.
The poetry unit developed from the idea that we need to get back to enjoying art in all it's forms. Written certainly, but poetry can also mean using our voices to bring truth and light, our hands to sculpt, paint and create and our eyes and ears to appreciate what has been created. It's the idea of turning the collective groan to the reflective sigh.
