Reflection: This bulletin board display is the first project I assign to the Math 8 students. It is the first of many projects that will be assigned in the year and is perhaps the least interesting in my opinion. I do this project though because it serves several purposes.
1. In this math class, we not only learn number concepts, but we can also depict those concepts visually and creatively.
2. Math exists everywhere we look, we just need to take the time to examine it.
3. Those that fear numbers and have always hated math are given a chance to see that it doesn't need to be that way for all math.
4. For many who have done poorly in the first few math tests, and there can be many, this is a chance to improve their grade.
5. It serves as a nice, small break from the quick pace in which we learn number concepts in a relatively short time.
6. The first project is always a choose your partner or go single project. This helps build the fledgling classroom community and allows students to make choices they are most comfortable with.
7. The school and classroom has just opened, we need student created work to fill the halls and classroom.
I'm sure the three classes that I devote to this project could be better served in actually learning more number concepts, but sometimes setting a positive tone and creating an atmosphere of high expectations are better for learning in the long run.
