What it Means to be a Grade 9 student in a K-9 School
Reflection: On the first day of school, I ask the grade 9 class on how we need to define ourselves in relation to the classroom and school. In essence, we ask ourselves how we aspire to be seen from our own lens and that of our teachers and fellow students.
I encourage a direction in our discussions but I leave it up to the students to define themselves. Interestingly, words like goal driven, daring to learn and collaboration often come up in the discussions. Certainly. they remark how they are the new leaders of the school and what that might mean.
My goal on the first day of school is always to remark on the challenges and differences of being a grade 9 student. I want them to build a classroom community and know the only way to do this year right is to collaborate and lead. I want them to take ownership of positive labels we place on ourselves and to visualize who we are meant to be.
On the first day of school, I introduce my first project. I ask the students to define themselves and to work in small teams to visualize the ideas of grade 9 in a bulletin art display. My goals are simple; I want them to collaborate, lead and define ourselves in a positive light.
