Care Share Dare and Defining Pink
Learning Outcomes: For students to understand that actions matter. "Care, share, dare" is the school moto, but really, what do these words mean? How do we show that we understand these words?
Reflection: Care, share and dare has been our school moto for the past two years. Early in the 09/10 year, we were introduced to the idea of what it means to be all three of these things by our principal David Truss. Early on Mr. Truss gave what he defined as care, share, dare. Caring is the idea of treating each other with kindness and respect. Sharing is freely giving and taking ideas, helping all learners and being selfless. Daring is taking chances with learning, being adventurous and learning through success and failure. The funny thing is, I'm not too sure if I've remembered these definitions correctly.
That's the funny thing about words is that we give them meaning. If I were to say to five people "please care in school", I may get five different actions, depending how each person interpreted the word.
"Pink" week revolved around that idea. Pink has some negative connotations to segments of our school population. The grade 7 and 9 Health and Career Education classes wanted to reclaim that word. The idea was for us to redefine the word in what ever way we chose. In spirit of the week, we posted posters (on recycled paper, of course) asking, "Have you pinked today?" "It's coming....think pink" and "Thank you for being pink!" All were cryptic messages of our coming week to show all the classes what it was to be pink.
Each day, members of the grade 7 and 9 classes created events to show school spirit and what it means to care , share, dare. The events were memorable:
Monday: Chalk Day
Tuesday; Free Hugs Day
Wenesday: Pink Day (dress in pink)
Thursday: Thank You Banner Day/ Chalk Day part II
Friday: Define Pink Day.
In the end, we chose and showed what it means to care, share, dare and pink!
