Egg Drop - The First Science Lesson
Reflection: This is the first assignment and lesson in the grade 9 Science year. The intention of this lesson is to introduce learning science as a problem that can be answered. To survive the egg drop test, students need to research, plan ahead, guess-and-test, measure, engineer and build. In the process, they collaborate, discuss strategies, and explain to me and the rest of the class why their contraption should work.
As the Science 9 and homeroom teacher, I want to get students to think about science right away and build the classroom community. There is not competition, and all are encouraged to share ideas. My secret hope is that everyone succeeds, cheers with each unbroken egg and remembers that science involves higher-order thinking skills
The Assignment:
You and a partner of your choosing will make a contraption that will safely land a raw egg from the third floor of our building.
The contraption should be made entirely of scrap paper and 1m of masking tape and free fall the third floor. Mr. Arca will provide the egg.
All contraptions will be tested on Friday, September 7th during science class. Please do not be late with your assignment.
Point scores: /100
+15 for a blue print or sketch BEFORE you start. (must have measurements)
+10 for sketch of the final product (completed when you have finished your product)
+20 for a mini written report on the science of why your egg should not break
+20 for only using scrap paper and tape (-10 for every item that is not scrap paper or tape….including new paper)
+ 30 for an egg that doesn’t break
