3D Math Constructs
Using math to create art
Math 8 standards:
- Draw and construct nets for 3-D objects
- Determine the surface area of
- right rectangular prisms
- right triangular prisms
- right cylinders
to solve problems
- Develop and apply formulas for determining the volume of right prisms and right cylinders
Art 8 standards: Create 2-D and 3-D images that demonstrate an understanding of a wide variety of sources, techniques, and strategies of image development and design

Reflection: As both the Math and Art 8 teacher I had a unique opportunity to combine two seemingly incompatible subjects and turn learning on it's head. And oh, how wonderful, was this whole project. The imagination and creativity were beyond all our expectations. In terms of math, all students had to create a math booklet of the surface area, volume and nets of the constructs. All students, regardless of their math ability, completed this portion of the assignment with success, thus making this one of my most successful ventures in teaching.
There were only two aspects to this project that failed. One, was that one group was quite dysfunctional and handed in a very poor construct. After telling the group they failed and would be given a second chance, they worked together to create a project the rivalled the other constructs. Second chances do work.
The second failure was only getting a 92% hit rate in student participation. One student, put little to no effort in the art portion of the project due to his perceived inability to do anything artistic. This angered both his team and myself as he never wavered in his position. I now realize that I should have given him smaller successes in art to build his confidence and given him an opportunity to do the project himself. I think, he didn't want to look stupid in front of his classmates and we never realized the pressure we put on this poor fellow.
