Creating Websites For Learning
This Language Arts assignment always begins the new school year. I do it because it's a big project to see where my students are at in terms of their written work and understand what past knowledge they bring to my classroom. The idea is to create a website about either the learning process, how to create a website or how to create a speech. The topics are not limited to these but are limited to something with language aspects like reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing.
The intentions are for students to use the writing process to create their website. As a review before we create the website, we look at each step of the process: pre-writing, drafting, revising, drafting and then publishing. We learn and apply
In the pre-write, students are encouraged to organize their thoughts, do research and create a "storyboard" to navigate their website. In the drafting stage, students write and design. Revising looks at their writing to make sense of what they wrote but also look at the early stages of their web stieto see if navigation and imagery is understandable. During the editing state, both writing and website are scoured for mistakes. Often, peer edits are helpful to see what's wrong. Finally in the publishing stage students submit their work for judgement on criteria that we as a class have created. These are our web sties.
