An Organism and It's Environment
Science 7 Learning Outcomes:
-Analyze the roles of organisms as part of interconnected food webs, populations, communities, and ecosystems.
-Assess survival needs and interactions between organisms and the environment.
Reflection: I love ecology and I love project-based learning. If there was a marriage of my two loves this project would be it. The grade 7s start the Science 7 year learning about competition, predator-prey relationships, ecosystems and limiting factors. To consolidate their knowledge, I ask them to look at an ecosystem through the lens an organism other than a human.
To coincide with my philosophy of learning, I allow students to choose their own partners, organism, environment and project. Everything is open to choice except the learning requirements. Many students choose the same thing they've done in the past. They choose their best friend, an animal they know well and a poster they've know how to create since grade 3. Interestingly, it is those students who think slightly outside the box that do well in this project. They experiment, put more effort and and are more creative. They think more, consolidate their learning more and are rewarded more.
Requirements:
What would you like to create? Do you want to create a diorama? A poster? How about create a demonstration? Would building a website be more of your thing?
Please choose any organism of your choice. You are to create something beautiful! However, you must also add information that would show
a) What is the organism's habitat (please artistically create the habitat) and what are the important living and non-living things that are a part of it's habitat) Discuss if it is endangered or going to be extinct.c) What it's distribution is around the world (this could be a picture)d) What are the limiting factors that prevent it from living in more places) What are some of the interactions it has with it's community (is it a predator or prey and how does it compete)
