Imagining Earth's Layers
Science 7 Learning Outcomes:
-Compare the characteristics of the Earth’s core, mantle, and crust, and describe the formation of rocks
-Explain how the Earth’s surface changes over time
Reflection: This is a fairly straightforward project. Imagine Earth's layers in any way you wish, including in a metaphor, but give real facts. Make it neat and eye-catching because these are the pictures that people look at and learn from. I consider this a fairly easy grade and offsets more difficult projects like the science fair that happen later in the semester. It's a chance to consolidate learning in a way that is unique to the student and is more enjoyable than a teacher-led discussion.
Some students take advantage of the easy grade and when given class time, they shine. Others, the ones who have shown little passion in learning, fall back into old habits. It's too bad, science doesn't always have to be rote facts to be regurgitated on a test paper, but some students seem to think so.
